Tattoo removal

Procedures

Tattos are nice as long as that's what you want. The moment you need to lose the tattoo, Lasers are the best to get the job done - safely and effectively.

Lasers have become popular in removing tattoo by selectively targeting the pigment colour. Lasers have become the standard treatment because they offer a "bloodless," low risk, highly effective approach with minimal side effects. The type of Laser used generally depends upon the pigment colours. Most often, a Q-Switch Nd YAG Laser is used since it is capable of targeting many colours. However, for effective removal of a tattoo, multiple treatments may be required. The effectiveness of Laser tattoo removal depends on the colour and the depth of the tattoo. Tattoos that were done by professional responds better to Laser removal than the tattoos that were made by amateur. Professional tattoo makers infuse the dye at a single plane beneath the skin compared to the amateurs. Homemade tattoos are often applied with an uneven hand and their removal may be more difficult. Professional tattoos made with some of the newer inks and pastel colours may also be difficult to remove entirely. Black and dark blue color tattoos respond very well to NdYAG 1064 nm Laser.

Laser tattoo removal procedure

Laser tattoo removal is a safe, fast and effective procedure. The treatment site is cleaned as in a surgical procedure. A local anaesthetic agent is injected into the tattoo area to make the procedure more comfortable. The procedure takes about 10 - 20 minutes depending on the size of the tattoo. A simple dressing is applied after the procedure. Patients are advised to keep the treated are dry and clean for few days after the procedure. Following the treatment there might be some discoloration, which will fade after few weeks.
Normally 3 to 8 treatment visits, done once in 3 - 4 weeks may be required for optimal removal of the tattoo. The number of treatment depends on the size of the tattoo.

Safety, risks and side effects

There are several advantages of Laser tattoo removal over dermabrasion or surgery. They include:

  • Laser has much fewer side effects
  • Laser is less traumatic to the surrounding skin compared to dermabrasion or surgery
  • Laser takes a much shorter time to complete the treatment
  • Laser is less painful

Side effects are generally minor, but may include skin discoloration at the treatment site, infection of the tattoo site, lack of complete pigment removal, and rarely, some scarring.

Cost

Cost of Laser tattoo removal depends on the size of the treatment area. On an average it may range from RM 500 - RM 800 for each Laser treatment.
