Radio frequency

Innovation

Radiofrequency is a procedure that uses radio frequency energy to rejuvenate facial features without the need for incisions or long recovery times. The Radiofrequency energy induces heat within the dermis without affecting the outer layers of the skin (the epidermis) and stimulates new collagen growth, resulting in tightening and firming of the skin. There is a slight redness after the treatment, but no blistering and no recovery time. Patients can resume normal activities immediately. While the procedure should not hurt, some may experience a sensation of heat in the treated areas. The entire procedure only takes an hour or so, with major side effects subsiding within days. The final result won't be apparent until months afterwards when the deep tissue layers have fully healed. Radiofrequency has the following effects on the skin:

  • Stimulate collagen growth and reduces skin laxity
  • Lifting the eye brows and enhance the appearance of the eyes
  • Reduce the sagginess around the cheek and reduces deep folds
  • Helps to contour the jaw line by tightening the facial skin
  • Restores skin integrity and optimizes the skin health

Radiofrequency has been FDA approved for the non-invasive treatment of wrinkles around the eyes. The new cosmetic use clearance is based on clinical data showing that a single treatment can safely improve the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles around the eyes (such as crow's feet).

The procedure

In a radio frequency face lift, a radio emitter is placed against the skin. The radio energy passes through the upper layers of skin and delivers heat to the underlying muscle and tissue layer. This heat causes the tissue to contract, causing the upper layers to contract with it. A cooling spray or gel is also used in conjunction with the radio emitter because of the amounts of heat involved. The result is tighter skin, reduced wrinkling, and a fresh new look. Usually there are only brief side effects like swelling and irritation.
Unlike laser procedures, radio frequency energy is unaffected by skin pigment. All skin colors can be safely and effectively treated.
Immediately after the treatment the skin will appear slightly red and in rare cases, minimally swollen.
An individual may require 4 – 7 treatments done once in 2 - 3 weeks. The actual number of treatment would depend on the severity of the skin condition, skin type and lifestyle. Upon achieving the desired results, the treatment can be continued for a prolonged duration at regular intervals of 3 - 5 weeks to maintain a healthier, radiant looking skin and to prevent the recurrence of the initial condition.
There is no restriction of daily activities after the treatment. However, it is advisable to apply more moisturizer and sun block to soothe the skin and stay away from excessive sun exposure during the recovery period.

Radiofrequency results

The effects of Radiofrequency are normally noticeable after few treatments. The results of the treatment are not as dramatic or obvious as a traditional face lift. That leaves the realm of radio frequency face lifts to that of early age maintenance. Like the mini face lift and other less effective methods, the radio frequency face lift is perfect for a younger client with only initial signs of aging. These can be treated more effectively than heavy signs of aging. Plus, the result is that a young patient can continue to look young without obvious surgical scars. Results are even better if sun exposure, smoking and stress are kept to a minimum. The results may last for few months; however, the longevity of RF effects depends on the skin condition, skin type and lifestyle.

Radiofrequency safety, risks and side effects

The common side effects are pain, redness and / or swelling for few days. In rare cases, some patients may experience scab formation that resolves within few days.
