A bulky square shaped jaw is just not right for a lady! Botox facial reshaping is a very simple 10 minute procedure, yet a highly effective and safe technique to reshape the facial feature.

Facial reshaping is becoming popular as more people prefer a slimmer and oval looking face. Particularly in Asians, changing the shape of the face from square to a more attractive oval shape can add a more gentle graceful appearance. A bulky and enlarged Masseter muscle contributes to a square shaped facial structure. The Masseter, which is responsible for chewing, is one of the strongest facial muscles attached at the angle of the jaw.
Masseter reshaping using Botox is a new, simple, safe and highly effective procedure. When Botulinum Toxin Type A, popularly known as Botox or BTA is injected into a muscle, it blocks impulses from the nerve to the injected facial muscles. The muscles become relaxed and dormant. Botox is target specific, which means only the injected muscles do not contract while the untreated facial muscles continue to contract in a normal fashion. When Botox is injected into the Masseter, it will selectively relax the muscle and prevents it from contracting. Prolonged relaxation of the Masseter muscle will induce “hypotrophy” and cause the muscle to shrink. The Masseter becomes smaller and slimmer over a period of few weeks and the facial shape gradually changes from square to oval. When the Masseter is neutralized, the chewing function is compensated by other deeper facial muscles, which do not affect the shape of the jaw.

Facial reshaping procedure using Botox

Once the physician has assessed the size and bulkiness of the jaw (Masseter) muscle, Botox is injected into each side of the jaw to neutralize the Masseter muscle. The Masseter once relaxed becomes smaller and slimmer over a period of few weeks. The facial shape gradually changes from square to oval. This painless procedure takes about 10 minutes and the results become apparent in 3 weeks. Though the Masseter activity is neutralized, chewing function is still preserved because other compensatory muscles come into action. For some patients who have excessive buccal pad of fat or jowls, please note that the procedure affects the Masseter muscle bulk and not the buccal pad of fat or jowls.

Facial reshaping results

The slimmer and oval shape will last for about 6 - 8 months and the procedure is done about twice a year. In some individuals, for no known reason, the effects may last longer or shorter than the published information. Once the longevity of Botox wears out, the nerve impulse gradually re-establishes and the muscle activity reverts to its original condition. Once Masseter activity is restored, the facial shape gradually becomes square again.

Cost

The cost of facial reshaping procedure using Botox or Dysport ranges from RM 2000 to RM 2200.

Safety, risks and side effects

Botox procedure is considered as one of the safest and well-regulated cosmetic procedures ever. It has been in practice for more than 20 years and leading Medical Societies, along with the US FDA regulate most of the Botox procedures. Regular injections of Botox into the facial muscles have been clinically proven harmless, produces longer-lasting results and effectively delays the onset of aging skin.

Side effects are minimal and typically relate to the local injection. Soreness or mild bruising, while uncommon, may occur around the injection site. Rarely, there might be temporary weakness of the chewing effect, speech disturbance and smile may be temporarily affected. There is no limitation to the patient’s normal activity / lifestyle after the procedure and the patient can proceed with his / her routine chores as usual. Botox injection is contraindicated during pregnancy and lactation, while on antibiotics or at sites that has any infection.
