Dermal filler

Innovation

Dermal Filler (DF) is a gel like pharmaceutical substances that is injected into the dermis or deeper into the skin. Dermal Filler is popular to treat facial lines or folds that appear at rest, unlike BTA procedures, which targets lines that appear on expression. Dermal Filler is also commonly used for chin, nose, lips and cheek augmentation; and to add volume to larger areas such as the breast or buttock. The most commonly used Dermal Filler for the facial area is Hyaluronic Acid gel since it has the most natural consistency (similar to the skin) and the least incidence of lumpiness while Polyalkylimide gel is popular for breast and buttock enhancement.

The procedure

The physician, after assessing the facial anatomy, shall plan the type and amount of Dermal Filler required for the procedure. The amount of Dermal Filler required can range from 0.5 ml to 4 ml for facial lines and / or augmentation procedures and about 10 ml - 20 ml for breast or buttock enhancement. The treatment area is prepared with an anaesthetic cream. Occasionally a light sedation is given to make the procedure more comfortable. Correction of facial lines and augmentation procedures normally take about 15 minutes. The procedure is fast, safe and appears natural. There are no scars or other traces on the face and the effects are noticed immediately. Due to the initial swelling, the results will reduce by about 10% a week after the procedure.

Dermal Filler effects

Despite the manufacturer’s claims, the longevity of the Dermal Filler varies depending on the patient's lifestyle and physical characteristics as well as the part of the body treated. Generally, the injected material is likely to be absorbed faster in areas that are more affected by muscle movement, such as the mouth. The injected Dermal Filler is degraded naturally and safely by the body’s enzyme system. Once the longevity of the Dermal Filler wears out, the augmented or treated area gradually restores to its original condition.

Dermal Filler safety, risks and side effects

The common side effects are pain, bruises, redness and / or swelling for few days. In rare cases, some patients may experience lumpiness or infection, for which a course antibiotics may be required. All the side effects are self-limiting and will resolve completely. The patient can resume their routine activity after the procedure, but they should adhere to the following guidelines:

  • Keep the treated area clean;
  • There is no dietary restriction;
  • Do not touch or use make up on the injected area for at least 1 day;
  • Do not perform any facial massages or facial treatments on the treated area for at least 2 weeks;
  • Avoid exposure to direct sunlight or extreme cold conditions in the first 2 weeks post injection.
