Botox

Innovation

Botox or Dysport is acronym for Botulinum Toxin Type A. It is a natural protein produced by microorganism Clostridium Botulinum. It is available as either Botox® (from Allergan pharmaceuticals, USA) or DYSPORT (from Ipsen pharmaceuticals, UK). They are both about the same. Botox is a chemical neuro-peptide that blocks nerve impulses to muscles and sweat glands. By blocking nerve impulse, Botox helps to relax the muscle and prevent muscle contractions, which is responsible for facial lines. Dermal Filler, on the other hand is a gel like substance, which when injected acts “mechanically’ by adding volume underneath the skin.

The procedure

The physician, after assessing the facial anatomy, shall plan the site and amount of Botox required for the procedure. An anaesthetic cream may be applied to make the procedure more comfortable. Using a tiny needle, Botox is injected into specific muscles. Botox when injected into a specific muscle causes local relaxation of those muscles. Botox treatment is well tolerated and takes just a short time with minimal recovery.

Botox and Dysport effects

Botox takes effect 5 to 7 days after treatment. The improvement generally lasts about 4 to 6 months before the effect gradually fades and muscle action returns. The average patient will require 2 - 3 treatments a year and repeated treatments usually produces longer-lasting results. In some individuals, for no known reason, the effects may last longer or shorter than the published information. Once the longevity of Botox wears out, the nerve impulse gradually re-establishes and the muscle activity reverts to its original condition. In contrary to the myths that the lines become more obvious once Botox wears off, the facial lines actually become less obvious and delay the onset of permanent lines.

Botox and Dysport safety, risks and side effects

Botox procedure is considered as one of the safest and well-regulated cosmetic procedures ever. Patients can resume their routine chores as usual after the procedure. Regular injection of Botox has been clinically proven to produce longer-lasting results, effectively delay the onset of aging skin and is harmless. Side effects are minimal and typically relate to the local injection. Soreness or mild bruising, while uncommon, may occur around the injection site. In rare instances, patients may develop temporary droopy brow or eyelid, or a mild headache (treatment for reducing facial lines); temporary weakness while chewing (treatment for hypertrophic Masetter); temporary weakness of the hand muscles (treatment for excessive sweating).

Cosmetic uses of Botox and Dysport

Expression lines and wrinkles

Botox is injected into specific facial muscles to reduce or eliminate the facial lines or wrinkles that appear during facial expression. Click here for more information.

Brow lift

Few tiny injections of Botox into specific areas of the eyebrow and forehead muscle help to elevate and reshape the eyebrows. Depending on the areas of injection, the eyebrow can be shaped to create a more natural and relaxed appearance. Click here for more information.

Excessive sweating

Injections of Botox into the underarm, palm or sole blocks the nerve impulse to the sweat glands and reduces the secretion of sweat. Sweating at the injected site reduces within a week. A single treatment session can provide months of relief, and the injections can be repeated once or twice a year to maintain dryness. Click here for more information.

Facial reshaping

The Masseter, which is responsible for chewing, is one of the strongest facial muscles attached at the angle of the jaw. An enlarged Masseter muscle gives rise to a bulky, square shaped facial structure. Botox when injected into the Masseter will selectively relax the muscle and cause the muscle to shrink. The Masseter becomes smaller and slimmer over a period of few weeks and the facial shape gradually changes from square to oval. Click here for more information.

Non-surgical face lift

Minute amounts of Botox Cosmetic are injected superficially into the mesodermis level of the skin and along the so called “anchorage” points of the facial muscles. Also known as Botox Lift, this popular technique helps to firm the facial skin, reduce skin laxity and reduce facial lines while preserving expression. Click here for more information.
